GOSNELLS-TRAINED boxers Brandon Ogilvie (16) and Jayden Hansen (17) will go to Azerbaijan for the inaugural 2010 World Youth Boxing Championships next month.

Ogilvie, from Beckenham, elected to follow in his father’s footsteps into the ring and boxes in the 57kg division.

“I used to play footy, but it got tricky trying to juggle both sports. I just focus on my boxing these days,” he said.

“I hope to get into the Olympics in 2012 and then turn pro a few months after that.”

“The competition’s going to be tough. I think there’s going to be over 250 boxers from around the world. I’ve never been there but it’s going to be really good and I can’t wait,” Ogilvie said.

The competition will be Hansen’s first trip overseas.

“This is the third year I’ve been boxing, but in the last six months I changed gyms and now train at Fox’s Boxing and Fitness Gym in Gosnells,” Hansen said. “My fitness has improved and my coach Foxy (Peter Wilkinson) is great.”

Hansen gave up a cricket scholarship at John Forrest Senior High School to pursue amateur boxing.

“In 2009, I won the WA State Belt, the Australian Golden Gloves Champion and I was runner-up in the National Titles Championship – all in the 54kg division,” he said.

“This year, I’ve been in the Australian youth selection trials.”
