PLANS to massively boost Australia's population are a bad idea and must be stopped, entrepreneur Dick Smith says.

'The Federal Government favours a "big Australia'' and wants to increase the country's headcount from 22 million to 35 million by 2050, largely by immigration.

But Mr Smith said this was ridiculous.

"We need to do something about this incredible increase,'' he said at an Australian of the Year dinner in Parliament House today.

Whatever your cause, it is a lost cause without population control.

I have to agree with everyone else. We can't support our current population so how do they plan on supporting twice as many people?
People die while waiting for medical treatment in hospital. People are being left homeless while illegal immigrants get first choice at public housing. Prisons are overcrowded. Courts have 6 month waiting times. Most states are on water restrictions and power failures are common due to excessive use. The list goes on.

How can we seriously consider having more people here when there are so many problems with the current population?

Increasing the population - what a silly idea! We are fighting global warming, amongst other things. Logic dictates that population control is a key answer to the climate problems which face us. The government should stop looking for the easy solution: more people = more taxes = greater government revenue.

i totally agree with Dick Smith.
Look what happens to other countries that are over populated.
AND federal and state government`s are unwilling and unable to get the health and crime system`s to what they should be as thing`s are.

It simply will not happen...

Simply, given our present infrastructure, especially where water is concerned, Australia cannot support any increase.
Less than 30 million and we are being told to conserve water...the U.S.A. has 330 million and no one tells them to conserve water...they cope because their WHOLE country is capable of development
